Entertainment at the library

The economic downturn started in the United States back in February of 2008. It then started in earnest in August of that year, and since then, Americans have been found more and more frequently in one particular place: at the library.

No longer a memory from elementary school or Judy Blume books, the library has reclaimed its place in American society as a gathering spot, knowledge center, and entertainment hub. You can find more than books at the library – you can find movies (DVD, VHS, and some libraries are even beginning to offer online downloads), magazines, book clubs, board games… and it’s all free, provided you avoid the scourge of late charges!

My local library branch is one of the places I most enjoy in the neighborhood. I’m lucky because it’s easy walking distance – just a few blocks from my house – so I can get there early, sip a cup of coffee and read the New York Times, or the Wall Street Journal, or any number of newspapers and magazines from around the world.

There’s also internet access at the library, which is a life-saver occasionally. A few years back ConEd (The Consolidated Edison Company – New York City’s energy provider which has a monopoly on the city’s electricity… don’t get me started) accidentally cut some wires in the neighborhood, depriving us of internet and cable TV access. As you can imagine, this was a crisis of near-epic proportions.

Luckily, the library’s cables were on a different grid, so when it came time to have to check email, send out resumes, or whatever the task, it was just a simple walk to get it all done. And unlike coffee shops or laundromats, at the library internet access is free. Just make sure you don’t act like a jerk and hog a computer for hours at a time – there are other patrons there as well.

The one negative I have to say about the library is that it turns into romper room once school lets out. I guess I’m a bit of a grouchy old man to think that way, and should instead be happy that there are kids out there who do more than text message each other and play video games, but in my experience if you put more than two children in any setting, there will be screaming in under five minutes. And their voices are like ice picks, designed by millions of years of evolution to burrow directly into the skull.

Ok, so I’m a bit of a curmudgeon. I admit it. But even with the scourge of children running under foot, the library is still the place to be. Save some money, save some trees, and enjoy.

Compare the Best Home Loan Rates Online

With the real estate market still facing uncertainty, this is actually a very good time to buy. Property values are currently at the lower end of the spectrum, meaning there are some real bargains out there if you look hard enough. And when you add in the fact that lenders are desperate to turn things around as well, the results are very positive for consumers. The bottom line is this: if you have a solid credit rating, you can find some highly favorable home loan rates to choose from.

Sure, banks are being a bit more cautious about home loan rates because of the recent mortgage debacle, but they’re still in the business of providing financial services, so past practices won’t really affect you in a negative way. For the most part, lenders are even more competitive than they were before, which means that home loan rates keep getting lower and lower. A quick Internet search reveals a bunch of advertisements, including one place offering a low 5.125% interest rate to qualified buyers and another offering loans of $200,000 for less than $930 per month. Now imagine what you can find if you start digging deeper!

Actually, comparing home loan rates online is the most convenient way to start your mortgage quest. This makes it very easy to see what all the major financial institutions are offering, allowing you to compare the best deals at a glance. Moreover, you can even check out what kinds of home loan rates some of the smaller outfits are offering. Sometimes the lesser known institutions can come up with bigger discounts than the national corporations, so due diligence in this regard can work in your favor.

Before you contact any of these lenders or sign on the dotted line, make sure you read all the fine print associated with the home loan rates you’re looking at. You have to find out what the effective APR is, if the rate is subject to change during the life of the mortgage, and what kind of default policies are in place. The time to learn these key details is before entering into the contract, not after. It makes no sense to cut corners when your financial future is at stake. And of course you should bring an attorney or other legal representative to the official signing in order to go over the documents one more time before committing the next 30 years of your life to the mortgage.

Now is an excellent time to purchase your dream house. It’s a buyer’s market out there, with reasonable prices and low home loan rates to prove it. Those with good credit stand to benefit the most, so take advantage of your impeccable rating by securing a competitive mortgage today!

Fashion Design Career

Fashion Design Career

Fashion design and fashion design schools like Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) and Parsons the New School of Design have generated more public interest in fashion thanks to programs like Project Runway (finally running season 6!), which boosts the fashion design career of the winning contestant by giving them prizes such as a vacation trip and $100,000 to start their own clothing line. For the remaining contestants, the idea is that they get some exposure for themselves and their designs on TV and they can still make it big.

Fashion is a brutal industry. Like Heidi says, ?One day you?re in, and the next day you?re out.? You constantly have to keep your balance on the cutting edge to prevent yourself from becoming sliced into yesterday?s news. You have to promote yourself relentlessly to get noticed and sought after. If you can?t find an organization or clients that like your work, you?re out?out of business. You need people to buy your clothes, and you need to keep them wanting to buy them.

That?s why Project Runway is ?the chance of a lifetime.? 100 grand to support your fashion design career is unlikely to present itself anywhere else unless you?ve somehow managed to win a very generous benefactor. Winning Project Runway is big bucks plus national exposure and the opportunity to meet the most notable figures of the fashion industry. But of course, this generosity comes with a price. In order to win the prize, you?ll be faced with all sorts of outlandish clothing requests that you?d probably never get in real life that need to be completed in an unrealistically short amount of time. For some fashion designers, this might be even more grueling than simply trying to make it in the fashion business on your own.

But the question is, does Project Runway really give fashion designers the boost they need? Critics contend that Project Runway is more about promoting good television and not a fashion design career. None of the past Project Runway winners has become a force to reckon with except for Christian Siriano, though it must be conceded that Jay McCarroll rejected his prize. As for the other contestants, they do get exposure but often their fame is largely based on being reality show contestants rather than good designers.

Maybe season 6 will be different. Christian has been dubbed ?the next Marc Jacobs? by Project Runway mentor Tim Gunn, and maybe he?ll have equal praise for the next winning contestant. In any case, most of those pursuing a fashion design career will continue to endeavor the old school way, and the rest of us will anticipate Project Runway on Thursday evenings.

Strategic Advertising for your Business or website

Strategic Advertising for your Business or website

If you are considering doing adverts for your business or website consider hiring an advertising firm. An advertising firm is an agency that is dedicated to creating, planning and handling its client?s advertising or promotional needs. It is an independent organization that provides an outside point of view to handling your efforts of selling to your clients your products and services. Most advertising firms will also go beyond handling promotions. Many will offer to market, brand and strategize your overall marketing and sales promotions events for you.

An advertising firm can either be full service agency or an interactive agency. Full service agencies work on a commission based or fee-based compensation. Usually, this fee is equal to 15 percent of the cost of the advertisement. In most cases, such an advertising firm will fulfill all of your advertising and promotional needs. It will provide such advertising services as strategic planning, creative development, media planning, production and media buying. Alternatively, you may decide to high an interactive agency. An interactive advertising firm offers a mix of web development, internet marketing, search engine marketing, e-commerce services, consultation and a host of other related services. The most successful of these firms are those that specialize in what are called digital space advertising where they use lifestyle devices like iPods, mobile and the internet as their marketing platforms.

The rising popularity of web-based social networking and community sites like Facebook, MySpace and YouTube has sparked market interest in personal and corporate community site development. Not to be overlooked is the phenomenon of sponsored search advertising that is the largest source of revenue for these search giants. Usually, the process works on an auction mechanism. Advertisers bid for different keywords and the search engine company allocates the final rank to the winning bidder. Thus, any search made with the keyword will result in the company having a sponsored link appearing at the top of the search results.

A search engine optimization advertising firm on the other hand uses keywords positioned strategically placed on the website content to direct targeted traffic to the website. Caution is however needed while doing this since, excessive use of keywords will alert search engine robots of malpractice and will likely result in a lock out where search results do not show your page results. In conclusion, whatever method is used to promote and brand your business or website by an advertising firm will surely be worth the time and money.

Is a Life Experience Degree Worth it?

As more and more people get access to the internet and as more and more businesses go online to look for potential clients and new avenues of doing business, the education sector has not been left behind. Today online degrees are commonplace and with a click of a button, anyone on any part of the globe may well be on their way of earning an online degree. Reputable institutions have also not been left out on this rat race. In fact, just about anyone, regardless of their educational background, can get an online degree. One of these degrees that seem to favor a lot the working class are the life experience degrees. What is a life experience degree?

A life experience degree is one that is earned after a person proves his or her skills in a job field. This experience that is needed in order to earn such a degree is expected to be practical to the desired field and should have been earned in the workplace. One advantage of this degree is that the holders of these certifications have both the practical skills as well as the papers to prove their authenticity. When pursuing for a life experience degree it is always advisable to pursue this form of degree in the area or field that you are currently in. Life experience degrees are thus seen as excellent ways to get a promotion without attending the traditional classroom.

While going through the net, you may also be amazed by the number of institutions offering online programs. This is where you need to take caution. There are many online institutions that offer reputable certifications, but there are also those that offer certifications that are worth only the papers they are written on. These online colleges are referred to as degree mills and there are many sites that keep listings of these ?colleges?. So if you come across an online institution that offers a life experience degree and has unusual demands or that has negative commentaries online, it is good to avoid it. Otherwise you may end up throwing your money away to the mill.

A life experience degree is a great way to authenticate your skills and have papers to back up those claims. Due to the relatively short period of time that it takes to earn these degree, usually around one to two months, it will likely result in savings, less stress from a classroom setting, and of course, a sense of accomplishment.
